Deldrimor is a kingdom of dwarves residing in the Shiverpeak Mountains. They are very friendly towards other races, such as the humans, and passage through the harsh mountain range (which, along with the Sea of Sorrows divides the continent of Tyria in half) is welcome to anyone who is a friend of Deldrimor.

Society
Most of the Deldrimor Dwarves worship one god, the Great Dwarf, and believe in a place called the Great Forge - presumably where all dwarves go when they die. Despite these beliefs being very different from those of the humans, they respect the humans' worshiping of multiple gods.

Their kingdom is ruled by a king. During the time of the Prophecies campaign, their monarch is King Jalis Ironhammer (who speaks with a distinct Russian accent). The dwarves are well-known for their incredible crafting prowess and players can receive some of the best equipment in the game from them.

The dwarven kingdom is very strong, the Deldrimor Army control quite a bit of the Shiverpeak mountains and several major locations, such as Thunderhead Keep and Droknar's Forge. In recent times however, they seem to be losing control of the areas located deeper in the mountains to the wildlife there and the Stone Summit.

Struggle with the Stone Summit
The Deldrimor Dwarves are in a civil war with the Stone Summit - a group of xenophobic dwarves with a hatred for all races, most notably man, as well as all who help these races (namely the Deldrimor dwarves). Throughout the Prophecies campaign, players help the Deldrimor Dwarves fight off the Stone Summit.

With the fall of Dagnar Stonepate and Sorrow's Furnace, the Deldrimor Dwarves were able to reign victorious and exile the remaining Stone Summit to the Far Shiverpeaks. There, the Stone Summit attempted to obtain power through various ancient entities. However, all of these attempts were crushed and the Stone Summit are believed to be eliminated with the death of Duncan the Black, the last hierophant.

Text
{{Verbatim|
Change is coming to Cantha, land of ancient traditions. The Ministry of Purity seeks to unite the Canthan people in defense of their homeland from the hideous Afflicted and other threats. But change can be difficult. Will this rising power usher in a new era of safety and peace or rip Cantha apart?
After murdering Emperor Angsiyan, Shiro Tagachi is slain in the Harvest Temple. Shiro's death unleashes the Jade Wind, radically altering the landscape of Cantha. Although the effects of the Jade Wind were immediate and far reaching, the true horror of Shiro's evil would not be felt for another 200 years.

;1390 CC - Tension with the Tengu
Tension rises between the good people of Cantha and the Tengu. While Emperor Hanjai's ambassador is able to avoid open war with the Angchu, the Sensali declare them traitors and foolishly continue their acts of aggression.
;1527 CC - Division in Cantha
The Luxons and Kurzicks cease regular diplomatic contact, communicating with each other only through liaisons of the Celestial Ministry when absolutely necessary. To this day, they remain more focused on their petty squabbles than on the problems that continue to destroy their lands from within.

;1582 CC - Return of the Betrayer
Shiro the Betrayer returns to Cantha, bringing with him the plague of the Afflicted. Though the Betrayer is stopped, the plague persists in Cantha. Countless lives are lost, from the families of good people forced to live in the streets to prominent families like the Yuudachi, head of the Sai Ling Order. Ashu Yuudachi survives the slaughter under miraculous conditions, and comes into the care of his aunt, Reiko Murakami.
Reiko, then a member of the Ministry of Flame, makes her first strides toward rallying the people of Cantha to fight back against the Afflicted. With Ashu at her side as a symbol of hope, her message resonates with the people. Little by little, Canthans begin to take their fate into their own hands.
;1586 CC - Dissent in the Ministry of Flame
Reiko becomes increasingly dissatisfied with the restrictions of the Ministry of Flame. Finding flaws in the system—the needless bureaucracy, political maneuverings, and personal agendas—she comes to the realization that something greater needs to happen if Cantha is ever going to be able to move forward.
Reiko officially establishes the Ministry of Purity, with Ashu as a central figure. The Ministry of Purity makes dealing with that which harms Cantha its goal: to take action when all other branches of the government are content to turn a blind eye, pass the issues off as the emperor's problem, or fault the other Ministries.

;1589 CC - The Purification of Cantha
The Ministry of Purity begins in earnest its campaign to finally rid Cantha of the Afflicted. Brave men and women rally to their cause, eager to make their homes safe once more. The fight continues, and the Ministry of Purity welcomes all those with the heart and the will to join them.

;1590 CC - Sweeping Social Reform
In the months that have followed the Ministry of Purity's campaign against the Afflicted, Cantha has been blessed with renewed vigor and prosperity. The Afflicted have been vanquished, and the Jade Brotherhood and Am Fah are all but a distant memory. The traitorous Tengu have been exposed and routed. With the safety of all Canthans in mind, the Ministry now sets its sights on reforms to ensure a brighter future for all.
clear
Absolutes
Being able to think in them, being able to speak them—these are the signs that prove strength of conviction. A lesser person doubts the absolute because they doubt themselves. They cannot commit themselves fully for fear that they might be wrong. I have no such fears. I have looked into the heart of this nation, and I have seen the evils that plague it. I have not turned a blind eye. Where others have been cowed, I have stood and faced them. I will not falter, for failing here—now—means that Cantha itself fails.

We as a people have begun to come together. We rid our land of the scourge of the Afflicted, and it was a great work that was done. It was proof that your own hands could reach out and shape the destiny that you sought. Every battle won, every life lost, every accomplishment, every tear shed, every heartfelt cry of joy in victory inched us ever closer to a brighter tomorrow, a life lived free from the shadows of corruption. This nation is becoming yours once more, and it is to you that I look now.

Our greatest battle is yet to come. The gangs yet pose a threat to Cantha, as do the people that would harbor them. What empire allows such filth to prosper? Are these the actions of a government that has the best interests of its people at heart? Or are these the actions of a government too weak and ineffectual to do what it is right? You have toiled on their behalf, and they have benefited from your labor—so now I ask you, what has the empire done for you? Now, stop and ask, what have you done for yourself?

The time is at hand. Change is ours to bring to these lands. Fight at the side of the Ministry of Purity, and fight on the side of justice. Do not be swayed by the words of weaker men. If a good man follows an evil leader, can you truly call him good? I say that he is just as guilty, for lacking the strength to stand up and do what is right. By his weakness, evil persists. This is why the gangs must be removed; this is why those that shelter them must be removed, at any cost. While they remain, Cantha will never be whole. This is an absolute, and there can be only one question: whose side are you on?

-Reiko

Loss and Hope
There are few things that remind me of my childhood as much as fireflies. I can still recall the feeling of the first gentle breeze of the evening, a merciful reprieve from the day’s heat. The sun would gradually slip away in a brilliant wash of colors, making way for the stars. And as the lights in the heavens began to shine, so, too, did the lights on earth. Fireflies, countless in their number, began their dance above the river near our home. And there I was, wide-eyed and embraced by wonder. In those moments, I was the only person that existed in the world. The moon was my spotlight, and the tiny flickering embers were the audience that I played to. In a very real sense of the word, it was magical.

It was those nights that taught me a fundamental truth of life: the things that bring us happiness in life are fleeting, but our memories of them are not. The seasons would make their inevitable march, and those dreamlike nights would turn to evenings bundled up against the cold. Evenings that I spent listening to my father, with a voice as deep and as soothing as the sea, telling us the great stories of our ancestors. I used to love those stories. I still do. I had heard them countless times, but every reading brought with it a sense of family, and of security. I used to love to imagine myself as one of those great heroes, dreaming of being powerful, charming, and beloved. Those nights would end. Unlike my fireflies, they would never come back.

I still think about the fireflies, from time to time, and the way that those nights made me feel. I know that I’m a different person now, and I know that I can never go back. But the fact that I can still feel the joy they brought me tells me that I’m on the right track, that I’m turning things around. There’s a part of me that has always felt guilty. I ran away…once. There was no choice for me, nothing left for me. Everything that I had loved was gone—a lifetime of simple, cherished days strung together, ended carelessly, impossibly, in only a few terrifying moments. That was seven years ago now. It’s hard to believe. It doesn’t even feel real when I think of it, as though it were the story of someone else—someone that I once knew.

I am no longer running away. I met someone on my travels, a man who was running from something else, in his own way. I saw in him a weakness that I saw in myself, and I set about fixing it. It’s funny how that works, isn’t it? We always want to fix others as though we were fixing ourselves. I wonder if he found happiness at the end of his journey. And I wonder what will be waiting at the end of mine… There is no way to know what tomorrow holds, but I will keep my head held high as I face it. Whatever the world wants to throw at me, I can only smile and say, “Heh. Is that the best you’ve got?”

-Miku

Join the Cause
Good people of Cantha, the time has come for you to take up arms. For too long now, our glorious lands have been tarnished, as they wither in the shadows of fear and helplessness. When Shiro the Betrayer returned, he brought with him the Affliction, and the plagued still walk these lands, spreading unabated. Great heroes rose up, and they sent the Betrayer back. But I ask you this: where are those heroes now? Where are they while the innocent seek what little shelter they can find, hoping to survive to see another day? Where is our great Empire, and what has it done to protect the people? When a voice cries out for help, do they even hear it from behind the palace walls?

Allow me to share with you a great truth as it was shared with me. Cantha is a land that does not need heroes. It is not a land that will tremble at looming threats. It is not a land that will stand aside, waiting for a savior. It is not a land where the people are so broken and weak that they cannot stand up for themselves. The strength that Cantha needs is the strength that comes in the moment when ordinary men and women confront that which holds them back. When they stand tall and proud. When their eyes shine with fierce determination. When their spirit burns brighter than even the sun. When a simple truth is known: they will no longer submit. Our strength is a strength that comes from a purity of purpose: good people working together for a common cause.

Ask yourself this: is there any greater future than the one that you shape with your own hands? This is what the Ministry is offering. The chance for a better tomorrow, a better Cantha, and most importantly, a better you. Believe me, friends, when I say that change is upon us. Will you be swept away by it, or will you stand at the forefront, to see with your own eyes where it will lead?
Conflict in Cantha is a series of pages from the official Guild Wars website describing the backstory of Cantha.

Text
{{Verbatim|
Part One: Two Factions
Cantha is a nation beset by troubles: civil war, nonhuman invasions, criminal corruption, and greater horrors. In its eastern regions, two vassal states—the Luxons and Kurzicks—are locked in a civil war that has lasted for over two hundred years. In its northernmost reaches, lumbering Yeti, swiftly moving Tengu, and relentless Naga defend their territories, preying upon human travelers. Within the heart of the Canthan capital, criminal cartels grow rich by exploiting the poor, while on the fringes of civilization, cults and madmen stalk a landscape corrupted by manifestations of evil.

Despite a benevolent emperor and polite populace, conflict and injustice thrive everywhere. Fortunately, a brave few are struggling to liberate the land. Canthan heroes have countless opportunities for adventure as they fight to bring order and justice to the empire.

;Factions at War
Over two hundred years ago, Emperor Angsiyan forged a peace treaty between the Luxons and Kurzicks, ending centuries of conflict. For the first time, Luxons and Kurzicks were at peace. Canthans everywhere celebrated the success of the emperor's negotiations... until Shiro Tagachi assassinated the emperor.

Shiro's assassination was part of a dark ritual that was supposed to grant him extraordinary power. The assassination succeeded, but Shiro was slain before the ritual could be completed. Upon his death, Shiro's soul unleashed the ritual's power, detonating waves of magical energy for miles in every direction. At sea, a violent storm created waves hundreds of feet high, battering Luxon ships into tinder. On land, a deadly wind blasted across plains and through forests, hammering Kuzicksic caravans along the way. This shockwave nearly killed the land of Cantha, until the storm stopped as suddenly as it began. On that day, the waters of the ocean froze in place and the Echovald Forest fell silent, after tens of thousands of innocents had been slaughtered.

The death of the twenty-sixth emperor changed Cantha forever. The Luxons had made their fortune through maritime trade, but a frozen sea brought their fleets to a standstill. The Kurzicks had survived by hauling goods across the land, until the powerful creatures that once protected the forest turned on those who lived within it. The Luxons and Kurzicks searched for new ways to survive—and they found them. Fixed within the frozen sea, and hidden within the deadly forests, stockpiles of rare amber and jadeite waited for those brave enough to recover them. Desperation led to greed, as Kurzick houses and Luxon clans warred for vast stretches of valuable land.

Both the Luxon and Kurzick cultures had been absorbed by the empire long ago, but the loss of the emperor offered greater opportunities. The Luxons and Kurzicks had been vassals of Cantha, but since their overlord had been slain, both factions saw a chance to seize power. The result was a civil war that would last for over two hundred years. From Amatz Basin to Eredon Terrace, the eastern regions of Cantha became a battleground, and the border between Luxon and Kurzick lands shifted from day to day.

Today, the benevolent Emperor Kisu rules over Cantha. The Luxons and Kurzicks remember the bloodshed of the last two centuries, and they still ceaselessly contest for land and power. The emperor cannot stop their continual conflict—in fact, he knows that as long as the two factions fight, neither one will be strong enough to rise up against him. He also knows that as long as they are eternally ready for war, they will be prepared to defend his land against more sinister threats. Luxons and Kurzicks are both still Canthans, after all, eternally watchful for evil in their midst... including malefic forces as dangerous as the infamous Shiro Tagachi.

Part Two: Wilderness Races and Rivals
A civilization of humans has tamed the troubled land of Cantha, but the human race is not alone. Other races claim the wilderness as their own, defending their territories against trespassing travelers. Wherever humanity travels, rivals lie in wait.

;Tengu
The Tengu are a proud race of avian humanoids living on the plains and mountains of Cantha. In the distant past, their race lost the power of flight. They have since learned to use the primitive tools and weapons once favored by humans, clutching them tightly in their talons. The Monks and students of Shing Jea have a tenuous truce with the civilized Angchu Tengu, but travelers in the north should be wary of the more nomadic Sensali Tengu, particularly in the mountains north of Shing Jea Monastery. The Angchu and Sensali prefer to keep their distance from one another. Wise travelers learn to tell the difference between the two tribes.

;Yeti
The Yeti have a far more primitive civilization, as they are barely intelligent enough to hold their hunter-gatherer society together. These lumbering giants only dimly understand concepts like honor and courage, but they will fight to death because of them. Although the Yeti possess a rudimentary language, only the most ambitious ones dare communicate with humans. They have abandoned all efforts to communicate with the nomadic Sensali Tengu, since their cryptic sense of “honor” demands that they eradicate all intelligent avians. Yeti have a habit of throwing rocks first and asking questions later—as such, most human travelers are ready for a fight when the Yeti are nearby.

;Naga
Like the human citizens of Cantha, the serpentine Naga have suffered because of Shiro Tagachi’s treachery. These water-dwelling creatures prefer to live in the oceans, but countless thousands were slaughtered when the Jade Sea froze. Since their habitat was drastically reduced two hundred years ago, they have taken to prowling on land to survive. Now the Naga are relentlessly aggressive in claiming stretches of coastland. They defend their territories against human adventurers out of a desperate instinct to survive at any cost.

Part Three: Crime and Corruption
Just as the Canthan wilderness is honesty in its brutality, the empire’s largest cities are plagued by dishonest criminals. While the emperor is diplomatic enough to gather heroes around him, the commerce in his empire is at the mercy of a vast and villainous criminal underworld. In the very heart of the Canthan empire, the capital city of Kaineng, two rival gangs prey upon the populace . . . and each other. The Am Fah control a network of assassins, criminals so bold that they have no qualms about launching ambushes in broad daylight. Representatives of the Jade Brotherhood, by contrast, are at least polite enough to walk up to their rivals face-to-face before demanding extortion money or bribes.

Even in the idyllic countryside, criminal cartels prey upon the populace. The corsairs and cutthroats of the Crimson Skull raid along the Canthan coast, demanding taxes and supplies in exchange for their “protection” . . . and killing those who refuse. Their strength lies in numbers. A hero who confidently dispatches three or four should be ready for the day when an army of them gather to defend their operations.

;Evil Incarnate
Some suspect the unthinkable: that Shiro’s malevolent influence is still at work in Cantha. Fearful witnesses speak of a mysterious plague infecting the innocent—a force of corruption that transforms natural creatures into unnatural abominations. Sages and learned masters of lore describe these tortured creatures as “the Afflicted,” hateful mutations that exploit the powers of the people and creatures they infect. Groups of adventurers are rushing across the land to look for a cure, but by many accounts, the only release from this corrupting plague is death itself.

As this malefic force spreads across the countryside, rarer reports tell of demons manifesting in the land of the living. The origins of these “oni” remain a mystery—some say they enter the human realm from the otherworldly Mists, while others whisper tales concerning stranger, more distant realms. Hateful of all living things, the oni appear in the human realm to slaughter the innocent and the unprepared, acting as avatars of evil.

;Wardens and Outcasts
Farther from the guarded walls of Shing Jea, the lands of the Kurzicks have fallen prey to darkness. Before the treachery of Tagachi, devout Wardens protected the Echovald Forest, using their druidic teachings to safeguard the land. Centuries later, the descendentssic of their once-noble order have become embittered by failure. They blame the Canthans and all humanity for allowing evil to spread across their domain . . . without recognizing or comprehending that the same corruption has infected them as well. Driven to madness, they have developed an elaborate cult with their own cryptic methods of reversing the effects of corruption. They violently oppose all others who get in their way.

The frozen waters of the Jade Sea have their own share of dark cults. Tribes of Outcasts wander the now-still seas. These Luxons were once reavers who made their living mining for precious jadeite. Greedy, and in search of far bigger payoffs, they dug too deep beneath the frozen waves and unleashed a monstrous horror. Now, driven to madness by their discovery, they wander the Jade Sea, killing anyone and anything unlucky enough to cross their path.

;A Call to Adventure
The Empire of Cantha is in turmoil, but a new generation of heroes is liberating the land. Some have armed themselves for the endless conflict of the Luxons and Kurzicks, eager for battle against other adventurers. Others have trained in Shing Jea Monastery, leaving its walls to travel through the lands of Tengu, Yeti, Naga, and other treacherous races. Whether a hero prefers to contest against other adventurers, face ravening hordes of nonhuman rivals, war with organized criminals, or purify the corrupted countryside, one thing is certain—there’s no shortage of conflict in Cantha.
Tomorrow, February 9th, we unveil the third and final chapter of Winds of Change, our epic Canthan saga. As part of Guild Wars Beyond, this story helps bridge the gap between Guild Wars and the time of Guild Wars 2 by thrusting players into the middle of pivotal historic events in the eastern island nation of Cantha. Winds of Change has portrayed the rise in power of the Ministry of Purity and the far reaching implications this has for Cantha.

Winds of Change has been our largest free content expansion in Guild Wars to date, and this final chapter sees the addition of 9 new quests, exciting new rewards, and a number of hidden scenes for players to discover that flesh out the story. This is an important day for Guild Wars.

Today we terminated more than 3,700 accounts for botting and match manipulation. In cases where guilds were found to be involved in these activities, the guilds were also disbanded. More than a dozen such guilds were disbanded and many others are under continued investigation. Today’s actions are significant not simply because of their immediate impact but also because they represent a new era in enforcement for us.

As many of you know, Guild Wars has seen a significant increase in the number and sophistication of bots in recent months. Particularly visible were new types of bots used in PvP. As with any hacks or exploits, our primary concern is the potential negative impact on the experience of other players. To a varying degree, cheaters hurt other players by inflating the economy, devaluing hard-earned accomplishments, or annoying everyone with RMT chat spam to sell gold gained through botting, but cheating in PvP is especially odious because it so directly affects the play experience of others.

As anyone who’s followed online gaming knows, bots and hacks are difficult to fully address. Every game of decent size works to keep the problem in check, but no single, absolute solution exists. Although our support team has worked for years to combat bots and actually bans accounts for botting every day, we realize the fruits of their efforts are not visible to players. Further, this new upswing in bot activity showed that our existing processes were not adequate to address the problem. Having made that determination, we’ve been working to improve things on several fronts: staffing, identification, detection, visibility, and enforcement.

April 28th, 2010 - Five Years in Tyria
The last day dawns on the Kingdom of Ascalon. Five years ago, with those words, the world of Tyria came alive. For many of us, that was the beginning of an epic journey that included warring kingdoms, an unexpected change in scenery, a mysterious doppelganger, a crystal dragon, and a treacherous lich.

In the years since, we’ve fought the Iron Forgeman, saved an empire, battled a god, befriended new races, and single-handedly defeated Palawa Joko, the Scourge of Vabbi, at the Battle of Jahai. We’ve watched guilds compete for international championships, gained and lost the Favor of the Gods, unlocked elites at a Priest of Balthazar, and witnessed the corruption of the Tombs of Primeval Kings. We’ve started and broken win streaks, run relics and captured altars, reconnected with friends, observed ATs, and invented builds and tactics no one else had tried before.

We’ve opened birthday presents, used a Signet of Capture after killing a boss, coveted Koss’ hair, groaned at the Mad King’s jokes, applied inscriptions and insignias to make exactly the gear we wanted, collected holiday hats, put crafting materials into storage, visited an anatomical engineer, chugged transmogrifier tonics, tracked down the Traveler, and yelled “This is Hard Mode!” We’ve formed guilds, helped out strangers, argued politics in Lion’s Arch, and made real-life friends who we’ve never actually met. In short, Tyria has been not just a place for our characters to adventure, but a home for all of us who have spent much time in these lands.

__NOEDITSECTION__Arenanet article
Chasing a Legend is a story telling the story of Devona, Aidan, Mhenlo, and Cynn.

Text
{{Verbatim|
"You don't want to go out there, laddie."

Aidan looked up from his pack.

The Dwarf who had customized his new bow scratched his beard. "The last fella from Ascalon who went out there never returned."

"Who was that?" asked the Ranger.

"'Bout a year ago, a fella named Tasco—"

"Marshall Tasca?" interrupted Aidan. He knew well the tales of the intrepid explorer. A man said to be impossible to kill, Tasca was reputed to have survived avalanches, locust swarms, and the occasional wummpus stampede. "He went out there?"

"Like I said," repeated the Dwarf, "Couple of seasons ago I made some gear for him... An axe, some boots, and a sturdy pack. Then he asked me to put together a dog sled for him. I did as he asked, but he never returned."

"Is that so?"

"It is," replied the Dwarf. "Come to think of it, there was another fella out here askin' 'round about that Tasco fella."

"Marshall Tasca, not Tasco," interjected Cynn. "What's wrong, your beard wound a little too tight?"

Aidan jumped in. "There was someone asking about him?" he asked the Dwarf, holding up his hand to silence the Elementalist.

"Aye," said the Dwarf. "Another human." He gazed at Aidan, Mhenlo, and Devona. Then his eyes came to rest on Cynn. "Not quite as rough looking as you folks—"

Cynn took a step forward and raised her hands as if to cast a spell, but Mhenlo caught her by the wrist.

"—but sturdy enough," finished the Dwarf, smiling at Cynn's glare. "Think he called himself Whitman."

The name brought Aidan to his feet. Since the Searing there had been only two famous Ascalon marshals—together credited with mapping every last leaf of the Maguuma Jungle and accounting for every fissure of the Shiverpeak Mountains. Indeed, there were parts of the snowy mountains that bore their names—places where each was rumored to have either died or come as close as one can to passing into the Mists while still making it back to this life. But neither had been heard from for more than a decade.

Aidan felt a tingle of realization roll up his spine. If what this Dwarf craftsman said was true, both had been to Droknar's Forge within the last year.

"And what happened to the second man... to Whitman?" asked Aidan.

The Dwarf shrugged. "Guess he went after that Tasca fella." With this the Dwarf smiled wide at Cynn, revealing a mouth half-full of broken teeth. "Probably went out to Grenth's Footprint and down into Sorrow's Furnace."

That was all he needed to hear. Lifting his pack, Aidan slipped his new bow over his shoulder and handed the Dwarf a sack of gold.

"Thanks for the bow," he said. With a quick glance at the others, he turned and headed toward the gate. "If I find Marshall Tasca, I'll let him know you still have his dog sled."

The Dwarf laughed. "Well, don't say I didn't warn you, laddie."

Devona and Mhenlo turned and followed the Ranger out of Droknar's Forge.

Cynn was the last to leave.

The Dwarf craftsman locked eyes with the Elementalist for a long moment, then he tugged on his beard.

"You might be right, lass," he said finally. "Might be a little tight today. That's what I get for braiding it meself."

Cynn smiled. "Better get that looked at."

"Aye." The Dwarf nodded. "And you'd better look after those friends of yours," he said. "If you think my beard is tight, wait till you get a look at the Stone Summit. No huffier mongrel on this frozen peak than one of them."

"I'll do that," said Cynn, her smile tightening on her face. With that, she turned and followed the others out into the snow.
