Types of redirects

New page

{{Formatting guideline||[[GWW:REDIRECT]]}}
This article details the formatting guidelines for all redirect pages. For help on what redirects are or how to use redirects, please see [[Help:Redirect]].

==Redirect categorization==
This formatting guideline primarily deals with properly categorizing redirects. As individual redirect pages aren't easily located beyond the exhaustive [[Special:Listredirects]], it helps if there is a categorization system in place to organize them for easier maintenance.

Templates have been created to make it easier to tag redirect pages into the proper categories. For example, the redirect page of [[Abbadon]] contains:
<nowiki>#redirect [[Abaddon]]
{{common misspelling}}</nowiki>

The second line of that redirect is the template tag, declaring that it is a redirect due to incorrect spelling. The result is that all pages that link to the incorrect spelling will show up in [[:Category:Common misspelling redirects]].

===Types of redirects===
The following table shows some of the allowed redirects and their corresponding template and category:

{| {{STDT}}
|-
! No. !! Redirect reason !! Template !! Category
|-
| 1 || Lowercase names to properly capitalized names    e.g. [[Lion's arch]] → [[Lion's Arch]] || {{tl|capitalization}} || [[:Category:Capitalization redirects]]
|-
| 2 || Plural terms to singular terms    e.g. [[Collectors]] → [[Collector]] || {{tl|plural term}} || [[:Category:Plural redirects]]
|-
| 3 || Names without punctuation to names with punctuation    e.g. [[Charge]] → [[Charge!]] || {{tl|omitted punctuation}} || [[:Category:Omitted punctuation redirects]]
|-
| 4 || Short forms of names to the complete name    e.g. [[Kamadan]] → [[Kamadan, Jewel of Istan]] || {{tl|short name}} || [[:Category:Short name redirects]]
|-
| 5 || Abbreviations or initialisms    e.g. [[DP]] → [[Death Penalty]] || {{tl|abbreviation}} || [[:Category:Abbreviation redirects]]
|-

|-

|-
| 9 || Former official names to new official names    e.g. [[Chapter]] → [[Campaign]] || {{tl|former name}} || [[:Category:Former name redirects]]
|-
| 10 || Grammatical derivations    e.g. [[Knocked down]] → [[Knock down]] || {{tl|grammar derivation}} || [[:Category:Grammatical derivation redirects]]
|-
| 11 || Icon redirects    e.g. [[:Image:Warrior-icon.png]] → [[Warrior]] || {{tl|icon}} || [[:Category:Icon redirects]]
|-
| 12 || Project namespace shortcuts    e.g. [[GWW:POLICY]] → [[Guild Wars Wiki:Policy]] || {{tl|shortcut}} || [[:Category:Shortcut redirects]]
|-
| 13 || Specific term or name to general term or explanation    e.g. [[Monk Tome]] → [[Skill tome]] || {{tl|general term}} || [[:Category:General term redirects]]
|-
| 14 || Fansite redirects    e.g. [[GWOnline]] → [[List of fansites]] || {{tl|fansite redirect}} || [[:Category:Fansite redirects]]
|}

It is understood that there are redirects that do not fall into the above groupings. For these, if they are deemed common enough, a discussion should be started [[Guild Wars Wiki talk:Formatting/Redirects|on the talk page]] to consider a new template tag and category. In any case, do take note of the [[GWW:CONTENT#Redirects|clause on redirects]] in the article retention policy.
