It is one of many terms to express a reaction of laughter. Other unrelated expressions that use this abbreviation include the mostly historical "lots of luck" or "lots of love" that were often used in letter writing.

Especially the lowercase "lol" is also used on its own or used as a prefix to create a disparaging remark. In certain [[Player versus Player]] communities the term "lolpve" is often used to express disrespect towards [[Player versus Environment]] gameplay and gamers, as such communities consider this mode of gameplay to be inferior to PvP.
