{{Policy||[[GWW:SIGN]]}}
{{Policy modification|rejected|Sign your comments}}
'''Signing your comments''' on talk pages is good etiquette and facilitates discussion by helping with identification. Discussion is an important part of collaborative editing. This policy defines ''when'' and ''how'' signatures should be used and to be kept reasonable; it does not dictate that signatures ''must'' be used. It is important to note that unsigned comments are treated the same as signed comments.
When posting comments on Guild Wars Wiki talk pages, a signature is highly encouraged. This policy defines when and how signatures should be used, not that signatures must be used. Unsigned comments have the same weight as signed comments.

== The purpose of signatures ==
== The purpose of signatures ==
A signature identifies you and your contributions to Guild Wars Wiki. It is a reference by which other users recognize and give attribution to you as a user, which incidentally encourages civility in discussions.
Discussion is an important part of collaborative editing as it helps other users to understand the progress and evolution of a work. Signing your posts on talk pages is not only good etiquette; it also facilitates discussion by helping other users identify the author of a particular comment, to navigate talk pages, to address specific comments to the relevant user(s), and to encourage civility by attribution and identification. Also, a standard signature includes the date and time at which a comment is made, making it easier to follow an ongoing discussion.

=== When should signatures be used? ===
== When signatures should be used ==
Any post or comment made to talk pages should be signed, regardless of the namespace. A signature aids readers of a discussion by showing the date and time on when comments were made.
Any post or comment made to talk pages should be signed. Signatures on the Guild Wars Wiki do not indicate ownership or authorship of any part of an article. As such, edits to articles are ''not'' to be signed. The only exceptions to that are special pages meant for [[GWW:ELECT|elections]] and [[GWW:RFA|adminship requests]].

=== When should signatures not be used? ===
== How to sign ==
Do not sign on any articles, since a signature does ''not'' indicate ownership or [[GWW:COPYRIGHT|copyright]] of any part of an article. Your edit or contribution will be attributed to you automatically via the revision history of an article.

There are two ways to sign your posts:

1. At the end of your comments, simply type four tildes ( <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> ).

2. If you are using the edit toolbar option click the signature icon [[Image:Button sig.png]] to add the four tildes.

Your signature will appear after you have saved the changes.

The end result is the same in both cases. Typing four tildes will result in the following:

{| class="prettytable" cellpadding="5" border="1"
! Wikimarkup !! Resulting code !! Resulting display
|-
|

<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>

|
<nowiki>[[User:Example|Example]]</nowiki> {{CURRENTTIME}}, {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} (UTC)

| [[User:Example|Example]] {{CURRENTTIME}}, {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} (UTC)
|}

Since typing four tildes adds the time and date to your resulting signature, this is the correct way of signing your posts in discussions.

Changing the number of tildes changes the resulting signature. While these can be used for other purposes, avoid using these to sign comments.

Typing three tildes results in the following:

Any exceptions to this rule will be explicitly mentioned and requested (such as [[GWW:ELECT|election pages]] and [[GWW:RFA|adminship requests]]).
{| class="prettytable" cellpadding="5" border="1"
! Wikimarkup !! Resulting code !! Resulting display
|-
|

<nowiki>~~~</nowiki>

|
<nowiki>[[User:Example|Example]]</nowiki>

| [[User:Example|Example]]
|}

== How to sign ==
Since this does not date-stamp your signature, you may wish to sign this way when leaving general notices on your user page or user talk page. This is also a convenient shortcut (rather than typing out the full code) when you want to provide a link to your user page.
Adding your username at the end of your comment counts as the most simple signature. However the wiki provides a convenient and recommended way to sign your comments - by placing four tildes <nowiki>(~~~~)</nowiki> at the end of the comment or by clicking on the [[Image:button_sig.png]] button at the top of the editing window. Upon saving the page, the four tildes will automatically be replaced with your signature and the current date and time. For more details, see the help on [[Help:Signatures#How to sign|how to sign]].

Typing five tildes will produce a timestamp with the current date and time, without adding your user name:

{| class="prettytable" cellpadding="5" border="1"
! Wikimarkup !! Resulting code !! Resulting display
|-
|

<nowiki>~~~~~</nowiki>

|
{{CURRENTTIME}}, {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} (UTC)

| {{CURRENTTIME}}, {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} (UTC)
|}

=== Anonymous users ===
=== Anonymous users ===
Users who chose to contribute to Guild Wars Wiki without [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:How to log in|logging in]] are also encouraged to sign. Without a user name, the [[Wikipedia:IP address|IP address]] will be used for identification purposes instead.

=== Dealing with unsigned comments ===
Note that if you choose to contribute to the Guild Wars Wiki without [[Wikipedia:How to log in|logging in]], you should still sign your posts. In this case, your [[Wikipedia:IP address|IP address]] will take the place of your username for identification purposes.
When a talk page comment is not signed, any user can append a note to the unsigned comment to show which user made it, using
subst:
with the {{tl|unsigned}} template. If comment was made by an anonymous user, {{tl|unsigned ip}} should be used instead. To add a timestamp on the unsigned comment, {{tl|unsigned+}} is a good template to use. It works on both registered and anonymous users. These are not required but they can be particularly helpful in discussions involving multiple users who did not sign. See the help on [[Help:Signatures#Dealing with unsigned comments|how to use the template]].

Be careful that you do not give attribution of an unsigned comment to the wrong user.
Your IP address might look something like this: '''192.0.2.58'''. Some users prefer to use their IP address instead of a user name because they think that an IP provides them with more anonymity. In fact, a [[Wikipedia:Pseudonymous|pseudonymous]] [[Wikipedia:Why create an account?|account]] (that is, a registered user name) actually provides you with '''more''' protection of your identity.

Note also that signing manually with a pseudonym or tag such as ''--anon'' does not give you more anonymity or privacy protection, since your IP address will still be stored in the page history. This also makes it more difficult for other users to communicate with you.

== Customizing your signature ==
== Customizing your signature ==
A registered user can customize their signature, but within reason. Read through and understand all of the following before attempting to [[Help:Signatures#Customizing your signature|customize your signature]].

'''When customizing your signature, please keep the following in mind:''' A distracting, confusing, or otherwise unsuitable signature may adversely affect other users. Some editors may find them disruptive to discourse on talk pages. Very long signatures that contain a lot of code ("markup") make it difficult for some editors to read while editing talk pages.
A registered user can customize his or her signature by going to [[Special:Preferences]] and changing the "Nickname" field. The text entered into that field will show up as that user's signature instead of the default signature (which contains just the username). Using a nickname which hides your true username or suggests that you are another user are seen as disruptive and are prohibited.

If you want to use a more complex signature (for instance, including your own [[Wikipedia:WP:HEP#Wiki markup|Wiki markup]] and [[Wikipedia:HTML element|HTML markup]]), you can check the "Raw signatures (without automatic link)" checkbox in your preferences. Just fill the "Nickname" field with your desired signature, exactly as you want it to be substituted. Be aware that even the raw signatures option treats markup very strictly, and some markup which works in normal pages will not work in signatures.

== Important considerations ==

A distracting, confusing, or otherwise unsuitable signature adversely affects other users. It can be disruptive to discourse on talk pages, or when working in the edit window. When customizing your signature, please adhere to the following rules:

* Clearly display your username in your signature.
* A shortened version of your username is allowed. However, you must ensure that there is not actually another user already registered with your shortened username.
** You are expected to register the shortened version as a new user account and create a redirect from that account to your main account's user page.
** Should the shortened version belong to another person, you are ''not'' allowed to sign with it.
** The shortened version must be an easily recognized as being a shorter version of your username.
* Advertising and inappropriate content in signatures is not allowed.
* You are allowed to use exactly one image or icon in your signature (see subsection on images below).

=== General rules and considerations ===
The following subsections detail additional guidelines and restrictions:
It is common practice for a signature to resemble to some degree the [[GWW:USER|user name]] it represents.
* Do '''not''' add offensive or illegal content to your signature (refer to [[GWW:NPA]], [[GWW:USER]], and [[GWW:COPYRIGHT]]).
* Do '''not''' attempt to impersonate another user. Avoid having similar signatures to reduce the possibility of mistaken attribution.
* As this wiki is primarily in English, avoid excessive use of non-[[W:Latin alphabet|Latin]] characters as it may be illegible to most users or unnecessarily difficult to identify. Users with non-Latin user names should consider using a Latin version of their user name (registering an additional account to redirect one to the other).
* Do realize that the issue of user names is a subjective matter. If you see a disruptive signature and would like to ask that user to change it, please remember to be polite. If you are being asked to change your signature, please do not interpret a polite request to be an attack. Remain calm and work on getting to a mutually acceptable resolution. Make use of [[GWW:RFC]].
* Avoid changing your signature often, especially into something entirely different. Your signature is what identifies you as a user, and changing signatures may cause unnecessary confusion and misidentification.

=== Links ===
=== Links ===
You must at least include a link to either [[Special:Mypage|your user page]] or [[Special:Mytalk|your talk page]]. It may optionally also include a link to [[Special:Mycontributions|your contributions]]. Aside from the above three links, no other internal or external links are allowed. If there are useful pages you wish to bookmark, place them in your user page, not your signature.

=== Appearance ===
'''''Do not include links to anything else other than your [[GWW:USER|user page]], user talk page or user contributions page.'''''
Your signature should neither inconvenience nor annoy other editors.

* Markup tags or styles that increase your text size, repositions the text, or otherwise changes the flow of the text, as well as line breaks (such as
<br />
) are not allowed.
You must include a link to your user page and/or your user talk page; you may include a link to your user contributions page. Beyond that, internal and external links are not allowed. If you find a particular Guild Wars Wiki page useful, put it in your browser bookmarks, favorites list, or on your userpage — not in your signature. Posting a link to an external website with each comment you make on a talk page is usually viewed as link spamming. If you want to tell other users about a good website that you are associated with, do so on your user page instead.
* Avoid using hardly readable or uncommon font families and always provide a common alternative font family.

* Although
<small>
is allowed, do not make your signature so small that it becomes difficult to read.
=== Appearance and color ===
* Do not use text animations or effects that cause visual disruption of a text page.
'''''Your signature should clearly identify the user, and not be disruptive to the talk pages.'''''
* Be sparing with the use of colors, especially background colors. Avoid using bright and glaring colors that disrupts the readability of a text page.

Signatures that contain a lot of markup or code are often unnecessarily long. The length of a signature reduces talk page readability while in editing mode.

* Markup such as
<big>
,
<sup>
, and
<sub>
tags (which produce big, sup, and sub text), are not allowed, as they disrupt the normal spacing between rows of text. Note that
<small>
''is'' allowed.
* Line breaks (
<br />
tags) are not allowed as they disrupt the flow of text by artificially lengthening the display space for signatures.
* Do not make your signature so small that it is difficult to read.
* Do not use text animations as it causes visual disruption of the text page.
* Do not use a background color in your signature.
* You are allowed to use different colors for links in your signature. Bright and disturbing colors are not allowed. Please also be aware that certain colors are not readable by people with [[W:Color_blindness|color blindness]].
* Bear in mind that complex formatting results in complex markup code, which results in reduced readability of talk pages while in editing mode.

=== Images ===
'''''Only one image is allowed and it must not be large enough to disrupt normal text spacing.'''''

An image can be used as part of one's signature, or as it's whole. Any complex formatting desired for a custom signature would be better off as an image. Be aware of the following:

* The user's signature may include at most one single image.
* The image can have a maximum height of 19 pixels and a maximum of 150 pixels in width (but take note of the length restrictions in the section below).
* If your custom signature does not include a text portion that clearly shows your username, then the image itself must clearly show your username.
* The image file should be named ''Image:User <user name> sig.<file extension>'', for example ''Image:User Example sig.png'' for the signature image of [[User:Example]]. Do not directly use an image or icon meant for other parts of the Guild Wars Wiki.
* The image file must redirect to the user's user page or talk page and be tagged with {{tl|user image}}.
* No animated images are permitted due to the visual disruption they cause within text pages.
* Using bright and disturbing colors in your signature icon is not allowed. Please also be aware that certain colors are not readable by people with [[W:Color_blindness|color blindness]].

=== Length ===
=== Length ===
Use short signatures, both in display and markup.
* Signatures that take up more than two or three lines in the edit window unnecessarily clutter the edit window and make it more difficult to distinguish meaningful comments from the signatures.
* The presence of long signatures disrupts the reading of comments when an editor is formulating a response. A 200-character signature, for instance, is already longer than many comments.
* Long signatures that are not broken by spaces cause edit windows to widen horizontally (any user may add spaces to it).

=== Images ===
'''''Keep signatures short, both in display and markup.'''''
One small image or icon may be included in your signature.

* The image used is constrained to a maximum size of 19x19 pixels, to avoid disrupting text spacing and readability.
Long signatures with a lot of HTML/wiki markup make page editing more difficult when attempting to follow a discussion in editing mode. A 300-character signature, for instance, is likely larger than many of the comments to which it is appended.
* Animated images are not allowed due to the visual disruption they can cause.

* Be sparing with the use of colors, especially background colors. Avoid using bright and glaring colors that disrupts the readability of a text page.
* The total text of a signature should generally be kept to about 150 characters, with leniency given to users with long usernames. This excludes the length of the date and time.
* The image file you use must be uniquely yours and used by you alone. Upload it under the appropriate name (e.g. ''File:User Example sig.png'' as the signature image of [[User:Example]]). See [[GWW:IMAGE]] for more details on user images. When uploading, also add {{tl|user image|<user name>}} to the image's description.
* Consider using an image instead for long signatures with complex formatting.
* Example:
[[File:User <user name> sig.png|link=<either your user page or your talk page>| ]]

* The full resulting signature (as it appears on talk pages) should be no wider than about 150 pixels, excluding the time and date. Use the width of two to three keyboard buttons as a general measure.
** The image used must link to either [[Special:Mypage|your user page]] or [[Special:Mytalk|your talk page]].

** If an image is used in your signature, include an empty alternative text for accessibility reasons. For example:
<nowiki>[[</nowiki>File:User <user name> sig.png| ]]
(note the space between the
|
and
]]
). Alternatively, if the image links to your talk page, use ''"Talk page"'' or something similar as the alternative text.
=== Transclusion/template ===

'''''Do not use transclusion, templates, or parser functions in signatures.'''''

User signatures are not to be stored on a separate page. Your custom signature must be in the "Nickname" text box in your preferences.

[[Wikipedia:transclusion|Transclusions]] and [[m:Parser functions|parser functions]] in signatures are avoidable drains on server resources. Transcluded signatures require extra processing. Whenever you change your signature source, all talk pages you have posted on must be re-cached.

Signature templates are also vandalism targets, and forever will be, even if the user stops contributing. Simple text signatures, which are stored along with the page content use no more resources than the comments themselves and avoid these problems.

== Dealing with unsigned comments ==

=== Transclusion ===
The template [[:Template:Unsigned]] can be used at the end of an unsigned comment to attach the username or IP to the comment.
[[W:Wikipedia:Transclusion|Transclusions]], [[W:Help:Template|templates]], and [[W:Help:Parser function|parser functions]] are generally not allowed in a signature.
* Transcluded signatures require extra processing and are an unnecessary server drain. Whenever you change the source of a transclusion, all pages transcluding the source must be re-cached.
* Signature templates are good vandalism targets, allowing others to modify your signature without you noticing it at all. And they continue to be vandalism targets even after you have stopped contributing.
* The '''only''' exception to this is if you subst a .js page from your own userspace. These pages can only be edited by the user who owns it and admins. To do this, enter
<nowiki>{{subst:User:Example/sig.js}}</nowiki>
(with your own username replacing Example) as your signature in preferences, then go to [[Special:Mypage/sig.js]] and edit it with the actual signature you want. All other signature rules still apply.
** This allows users to have different signatures on GWW and GW2W, despite preferences being shared between the wikis, by editing the sig.js pages on each wiki differently.
