{{Policy modification||Sign your comments}}
'''Signing your comments''' on talk pages is good etiquette and facilitates discussion by helping with identification. Discussion is an important part of collaborative editing. This policy defines ''when'' and ''how'' signatures should be used and to be kept reasonable; it does not dictate that signatures ''must'' be used. It is important to note that unsigned comments are treated the same as signed comments.
This policy defines ''how'' and ''when'' signatures are to be used, in addition to outlining rules regarding ''what'' is an acceptable signature.

== The purpose of signatures ==
== The purpose of signatures ==
A signature identifies you and your contributions to Guild Wars Wiki. It is a reference by which other users recognize and give attribution to you as a user, which incidentally encourages civility in discussions.
It is important to understand that signatures on Guild Wars Wiki do ''not'' indicate ownership or copyright of any part of an article to that user. Signatures are useful tools for identification and attribution, and thus frequent changes to your signature's appearance will reduce its effectiveness.

Discussions are an important part of any collaborative editing effort, as they help explain the progress and evolution of a literary work. Signing comments is not just good etiquette. Signatures facilitate discussion by making it easier to follow a discussion between several people, as the standard signature includes both the name of the user and a timestamp for the comment. They also make it easier to navigate talk pages, to address comments to specific users, and to encourage civility by attribution and identification.

=== When should signatures be used? ===
=== When should signatures be used? ===
Any post or comment made to talk pages should be signed, regardless of the namespace. A signature aids readers of a discussion by showing the date and time on when comments were made.
Any post or comment made to talk pages should be signed, regardless of the namespace. Yet it should be noted that unsigned comments, while discouraged, have the same weight as signed comments. An explanation on how to deal with unsigned comments is explained in a later section.

=== When should signatures not be used? ===
=== When should signatures not be used? ===
Do not sign on any articles, since a signature does ''not'' indicate ownership or [[GWW:COPYRIGHT|copyright]] of any part of an article. Your edit or contribution will be attributed to you automatically via the revision history of an article.
Do not add your signature to an article. As attribution of content is already logged in the history of an article, attempting to claim ownership or credit by signing on an article is not allowed. The only exception to this rule are for special pages in the project namespace where signatures are explicitly requested for (such as [[GWW:ELECT|elections]] and [[GWW:RFA|adminship requests]]).

Any exceptions to this rule will be explicitly mentioned and requested (such as [[GWW:ELECT|election pages]] and [[GWW:RFA|adminship requests]]).

== How to sign ==
== How to sign ==
Adding your username at the end of your comment counts as the most simple signature. However the wiki provides a convenient and recommended way to sign your comments - by placing four tildes <nowiki>(~~~~)</nowiki> at the end of the comment or by clicking on the [[Image:button_sig.png]] button at the top of the editing window. Upon saving the page, the four tildes will automatically be replaced with your signature and the current date and time. For more details, see the help on [[Help:Signatures#How to sign|how to sign]].

Users who chose to contribute to Guild Wars Wiki without [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:How to log in|logging in]] are also encouraged to sign. Without a user name, the [[Wikipedia:IP address|IP address]] will be used for identification purposes instead.

=== Dealing with unsigned comments ===
=== Dealing with unsigned comments ===
When a talk page comment is not signed, any user can append a note to the unsigned comment to show which user made it, using
subst:
with the {{tl|unsigned}} template. If comment was made by an anonymous user, {{tl|unsigned ip}} should be used instead. To add a timestamp on the unsigned comment, {{tl|unsigned+}} is a good template to use. It works on both registered and anonymous users. These are not required but they can be particularly helpful in discussions involving multiple users who did not sign. See the help on [[Help:Signatures#Dealing with unsigned comments|how to use the template]].
When a talk page comment is unsigned, any user can append a note to the unsigned comment to show which user made it (e.g. with the {{tl|unsigned}} template). Be very careful that you do not give attribution of an unsigned comment to the wrong user.

== Customizing your signature ==
== Customizing your signature ==
A registered user can customize their signature, but within reason. Read through and understand all of the following before attempting to [[Help:Signatures#Customizing your signature|customize your signature]].
A registered user can choose to customize his or her signature, however, to keep the wiki readable, there are several limits on customized signatures, described below.

'''When customizing your signature, please keep the following in mind:''' A distracting, confusing, or otherwise unsuitable signature may adversely affect other users. Some editors may find them disruptive to discourse on talk pages. Very long signatures that contain a lot of code ("markup") make it difficult for some editors to read while editing talk pages.
=== General rules ===
A distracting, confusing, or otherwise unsuitable signature adversely affects other users. It can be disruptive to discourse on talk pages, or when working in the edit window. When customizing your signature, please adhere to the following rules:

=== General rules and considerations ===
* Clearly display your username in your signature.
It is common practice for a signature to resemble to some degree the [[GWW:USER|user name]] it represents.
**Do not use characters that are not in your user name to represent the characters in your name. For example, substituting characters in a manner such as [[W:Leet speak|leet speak]] makes it difficult for users to interpret your name.
* Do '''not''' add offensive or illegal content to your signature (refer to [[GWW:NPA]], [[GWW:USER]], and [[GWW:COPYRIGHT]]).
* A shortened version of your username is allowed. However, you must ensure that there is not actually another user already registered with your shortened username.
* Do '''not''' attempt to impersonate another user. Avoid having similar signatures to reduce the possibility of mistaken attribution.
** You are expected to register the shortened version as a new user account and create a redirect from that account to your main account's user page.
* As this wiki is primarily in English, avoid excessive use of non-[[W:Latin alphabet|Latin]] characters as it may be illegible to most users or unnecessarily difficult to identify. Users with non-Latin user names should consider using a Latin version of their user name (registering an additional account to redirect one to the other).
** Should the shortened version belong to another person, you are ''not'' allowed to sign with it.
* Do realize that the issue of user names is a subjective matter. If you see a disruptive signature and would like to ask that user to change it, please remember to be polite. If you are being asked to change your signature, please do not interpret a polite request to be an attack. Remain calm and work on getting to a mutually acceptable resolution. Make use of [[GWW:RFC]].
** The shortened version must be easily recognized as being a shorter form of your user name.
* Avoid changing your signature often, especially into something entirely different. Your signature is what identifies you as a user, and changing signatures may cause unnecessary confusion and misidentification.
* Advertisements or offensive material are strictly not allowed in signatures.
* You are allowed to use exactly one image or icon in your signature (see the section on images below).

=== Links ===
=== Links ===
You must at least include a link to either [[Special:Mypage|your user page]] or [[Special:Mytalk|your talk page]]. It may optionally also include a link to [[Special:Mycontributions|your contributions]]. Aside from the above three links, no other internal or external links are allowed. If there are useful pages you wish to bookmark, place them in your user page, not your signature.
You must at least include a link to [[Special:Mypage|your user page]] or [[Special:Mytalk|your talk page]]. Your signature can only contain links to your user page, your talk page, or [[Special:Mycontributions|your contributions page]]. Any other internal or external links are not allowed in your signature.

=== Formatting ===
The most important rule for signature formatting is that they must not be disruptive to the normal flow of text on a talk page. The following are several examples of problematic and disallowed formatting:

* Line breaks (
<br />
tags) are not allowed as they disrupt the flow of text by unnecessarily increasing the display space for signatures.
* Markup tags
<big>
,
<sup>
, and
<sub>
(which produce big, sup, and sub text) are not allowed; they disrupt the normal spacing between rows of text. Note that the
<small>
tag ''is'' allowed.
* Do not make your signature so small that it becomes difficult to read.
* Do not use text animations as it causes visual disruption of the text page.
* Do not use any background color or background pattern in your signature.
* Do not create rainbow-colored signatures or use colors that are too bright or disturbing. Be aware that certain colors cannot be seen by people with [[W:Color_blindness|color blindness]].

Bear in mind that complex formatting results in complex and unnecessarily long markup code, which in turn results in reduced readability of talk pages while in editing mode. See the section on length further below.

=== Images ===
One icon is allowed as part of one's signature. The rules regarding such an icon are as follows:

=== Appearance ===
* The user's signature may show at most one image (or icon).
Your signature should neither inconvenience nor annoy other editors.
* The image is constrained to a maximum size of 19x19 pixels, to minimize visual disruption.
* Markup tags or styles that increase your text size, repositions the text, or otherwise changes the flow of the text, as well as line breaks (such as
<br />
) are not allowed.
* The image used must be named appropriately (e.g. ''Image:User Example sig.png'' as the signature image of [[User:Example]]). Do not directly use an image or icon meant for other parts of Guild Wars Wiki or one that is used by another user.
* Avoid using hardly readable or uncommon font families and always provide a common alternative font family.
* The image used must redirect to the user page or talk page of that user and be tagged with {{tl|user image}}.
* Although
<small>
is allowed, do not make your signature so small that it becomes difficult to read.
* The image used must not be an animated image.
* Do not use text animations or effects that cause visual disruption of a text page.
* Do not use too many colors or colors that are too bright or disturbing. Be aware that certain colors cannot be seen by people with [[W:Color_blindness|color blindness]].
* Be sparing with the use of colors, especially background colors. Avoid using bright and glaring colors that disrupts the readability of a text page.

=== Length ===
=== Length ===
Use short signatures, both in display and markup.
Signatures that contain a lot of markup or code are often unnecessarily long. Long signatures with a lot of HTML/wiki markup make page editing more difficult when attempting to follow a discussion in editing mode. A 300-character signature, for instance, is likely larger than many of the comments to which it is appended to.
* Signatures that take up more than two or three lines in the edit window unnecessarily clutter the edit window and make it more difficult to distinguish meaningful comments from the signatures.

* The presence of long signatures disrupts the reading of comments when an editor is formulating a response. A 200-character signature, for instance, is already longer than many comments.
Strive to keep the total number of characters in your custom signature to around 150 characters, with reasonable leniency given to users with long user names. The length of the timestamp can be excluded.
* Long signatures that are not broken by spaces cause edit windows to widen horizontally (any user may add spaces to it).

The resulting signature (as it appears on talk pages after saving an edit) should generally be no wider than about 150 pixels, excluding the time and date.

=== Images ===
=== Page transclusion ===
One small image or icon may be included in your signature.
User signatures are not to be stored on a separate page, ie your custom signature must be wholly in the "Nickname" text box in your preferences, due to the reasons below.
* The image used is constrained to a maximum size of 19x19 pixels, to avoid disrupting text spacing and readability.

* Animated images are not allowed due to the visual disruption they can cause.
*[[Wikipedia:transclusion|Transcluded]] signatures require extra processing and are an unnecessary server drain. Whenever you change the source of a transclusion, all pages transcluding the source must be re-cached.
* Be sparing with the use of colors, especially background colors. Avoid using bright and glaring colors that disrupts the readability of a text page.
*Signature templates are good vandalism targets, allowing others to modify your signature without you noticing it at all.
* The image file you use must be uniquely yours and used by you alone. Upload it under the appropriate name (e.g. ''File:User Example sig.png'' as the signature image of [[User:Example]]). See [[GWW:IMAGE]] for more details on user images. When uploading, also add {{tl|user image|<user name>}} to the image's description.
* Example:
[[File:User <user name> sig.png|link=<either your user page or your talk page>| ]]

** The image used must link to either [[Special:Mypage|your user page]] or [[Special:Mytalk|your talk page]].
** If an image is used in your signature, include an empty alternative text for accessibility reasons. For example:
<nowiki>[[</nowiki>File:User <user name> sig.png| ]]
(note the space between the
|
and
]]
). Alternatively, if the image links to your talk page, use ''"Talk page"'' or something similar as the alternative text.

=== Transclusion ===
== Failure to adhere ==
[[W:Wikipedia:Transclusion|Transclusions]], [[W:Help:Template|templates]], and [[W:Help:Parser function|parser functions]] are generally not allowed in a signature.
If a signature is found to be in violation of this policy, a notice should be placed on that user's talk page explaining the violation and requesting compliance. That user is expected to comply with the notice within a week. Failure to comply would warrant a subsequent warning notice on that user's talk page. Further ignorance of the warning after 3 days (especially if that user was seen to be active around the wiki after the warning) may be construed as purposeful defiance of policy and administrators are then allowed to ban the user in question for a short time period. A subsequent longer ban is placed if that user persists in defying this policy.
* Transcluded signatures require extra processing and are an unnecessary server drain. Whenever you change the source of a transclusion, all pages transcluding the source must be re-cached.
* Signature templates are good vandalism targets, allowing others to modify your signature without you noticing it at all. And they continue to be vandalism targets even after you have stopped contributing.
* The '''only''' exception to this is if you subst a .js page from your own userspace. These pages can only be edited by the user who owns it and admins. To do this, enter
<nowiki>{{subst:User:Example/sig.js}}</nowiki>
(with your own username replacing Example) as your signature in preferences, then go to [[Special:Mypage/sig.js]] and edit it with the actual signature you want. All other signature rules still apply.
** This allows users to have different signatures on GWW and GW2W, despite preferences being shared between the wikis, by editing the sig.js pages on each wiki differently.

With regards to the subjective elements of this policy, such as the misuse of formatting or colors and overly long signatures, all users are expected to comply with requests to modify their signature should there be multiple valid and reasonable complaints from several different users. Ignoring such requests may be construed as being in violation of this policy.
