Walkthrough
Take the path heading directly East outside of Lion's Arch and follow it North until you reach Archivist Ithimar. As soon as you accept the quest, groups of Nightmares will begin spawning around the foot of Ithimar's pedestal, one group at a time. There will be two groups of 2, one group of 3, and finally a group of 4, with each group only appearing once all of the Nightmares in the previous group have been killed. The Nightmares are fairly weak, especially in small numbers, relying on Touch of Agony combined with Dark Aura for moderate AoE spike damage. However, be careful about casting spells on yourself or your allies, since you may be hexed with Mark of Subversion.
After clearing all the groups, talk to Ithimar again for your reward.

- Hello there! Am I ever glad to see you. I was out here trying to transcribe some of the images engraved on these ruins and… well, normally this is such a trivial task… but this time, whenever I begin, shadowy Nightmares emerge from the ground and drive me away.
- You appear to be a capable «profession». Could you keep the Nightmares away while I finish my work?
Accept: "I'll watch your back."
Decline: "You're on your own."
Ask: "Hold those Nightmares off a bit longer. I'm almost finished!"

- Many thanks, my friend! I'm not sure why those infernal creatures were so intent on keeping me from transcribing those images, but I can't wait to return to my workshop and begin deciphering them.
Notes
- The Nightmares will not actually attack Archivist Ithimar, and cannot damage him even with Dark Aura.
- During the quest, Archivist Ithimar will be animated as if he is activating a skill, but no skill is actually being used.
- If you rezone before all the Nightmares have been killed, you will need to speak to Ithimar and ask him about the quest to cause the Nightmares to spawn again.
- If you keep the quest active, the Nightmares can be farmed for Piles of Glittering Dust and Shadowy Remnants. In Normal Mode, the Nightmares are level 15, making them a good source of experience.
- If you intend to farm the quest, consider also keeping The Ascalon Settlement active for the allies it provides.
- On some occasions a Krytan/Locked Chest will spawn as soon as a group of Nightmares appears.
