Walkthrough

Exit Piken Square through the northern exit and head north to locate the tunnel entrance (see map).

Level 1: Fight your way south down the winding path towards the Dungeon Lock. The enemies you encounter will be the same as on your last trip through this floor, except for the addition of some Shard Elementals and Hulking Shard Elementals near each patch of crystalline ground, which are just slightly stronger versions of the Cave Elementals encountered previously. At the south end of the dungeon, there will be a large chamber with numerous Charr, grawl, and elemental foes, so pull carefully to avoid over-aggro, and be mindful of two Charr Hunters circling the perimeter. Wyle Brimscourge will also be patrolling the area, and although he is a high-level warrior, he can be pulled and fought by himself, making him relatively simple to defeat. Time your most damaging abilities for when he uses Frenzy or Healing Signet. If you cannot withstand his attack damage, consider retreating up the slopes to the north to the edge of his following range, or using a pet or fire imp to tank. Wyle will drop a Dungeon Key, allowing you to open the lock and enter the portal to level 2.

Level 2: Follow the passage down and east through some grawl, and as you turn to the north, you will see a vast chamber full of grawl and some patrolling Charr groups. Carefully cross to the north side of the chamber, pulling groups and keeping an eye on their patrol routes. Head for the western stairs on the north side, leading up to a room with more Shard Elementals and crystalline ground, then head directly north to encounter the first of three Charr patrols. Each patrol consists of one Charr Patrol Leader and a pair of Charr Patrol Stalkers. The stalkers are in a separate group and can easily be engaged separately from their leaders. Once you have killed this patrol, continue north past some more Shard Elementals to a passage leading to a crystal gate, where you will find the second patrol. Finally, head east past some oakhearts and ironhearts to find the third patrol in the northeast corner of the dungeon. Once all three patrols are dead, map travel back to Piken Square to claim the rewards.

Anomaly Anomaly. The Charr Patrol Leaders do not need to be killed to progress the quest. Only the Charr Patrol Stalkers are counted.

Dialogue

Initial dialogue

Lieutenant Greywind
"Recent scouting reports indicate that the Charr are using the tunnels beneath the Northlands to mobilize and consolidate their forces. What's more, those tunnels run right up against our Northern Wall. I don't know what the Charr are planning, and I have no intention of waiting around to find out.
You were instrumental in securing Piken for us. Can I ask you for your aid again in combatting the Charr threat?
Mullenix went ahead to the tunnels and has been conducting his own reconnaissance. He can aid you in accessing the lower levels where the Charr are holed up. Show them the Vanguard won't be outmaneuvered so easily!"
Yes Accept: "Leave the Charr to me."
No Decline: "I'm needed elsewhere."
Ask Ask: "Be careful in those tunnels. It's hard to know how great the Charr forces are, or what they could be up to down there."

Intermediate dialogue

When approaching Adept Mullenix in the Forsaken Tunnels
Adept Mullenix: "Over here! I have something for you."
When approaching the central Charr patrol
Charr Patrol Leader: "Human intruders! Set the pot to boiling, brothers!"
When approaching the northern Charr patrol
Charr Patrol Leader: "I have half a mind to spare you, human. If only so you may watch and despair as Maz Scourgeheart and his army tear down your pathetic Wall!"
Charr Patrol Leader: "Unfortunately for you, I'm much too hungry."
When approaching the northeastern Charr patrol
Charr Patrol Leader: "Maz's elementals give me the creeps. I woke last night and one was just standing over me! Menacingly!"

Reward dialogue

Lieutenant Greywind
"Great work down there. You make the Vanguard proud, soldier. I bet those Charr are licking their wounds right now. They'll think twice before venturing close to our Wall again!
What's that? You overheard the Charr speaking about an...army? Tell me what you know."

Notes

  • The Charr Patrol Leaders start moving when they are approached, and will walk to a new location if they are left alone. The central leader moves northwest and stops at the entrance to the chamber filled with rock-crushing machines, the northern leader heads southeast through a tunnel filled with crystals and walks all the way to the middle of the large atrium chamber, and the northeastern leader merely steps out to the entrance of the tunnel he is found in.
  • If any party members have not completed Long Thought Forgotten, the western entrance to the dungeon will be closed, requiring the party to travel to the eastern entrance.
  • The quest spawns, including Wyle Brimscourge, will be overridden if any party members have Long Thought Forgotten active in their quest log.
  • Although this quest can be acquired without ReforgedMode-Small.pngReforged Mode enabled, the quest NPCs will not spawn and the objectives will not progress while any member of the party is not in Reforged Mode.
    • Adding a player without Reforged Mode to the party will prevent enemies spawning in the northern part of the Northlands, making it significantly easier to reach the Forsaken Tunnels. The quest can still be completed if all players without Reforged Mode log out or map travel away before entering the dungeon.
  • By using the eastern dungeon entrance, running swiftly through the portal to level 2 when it is open, and moving very carefully on level 2, it is possible to complete this quest without fighting any Charr groups inside the dungeon except Wyle and the Charr Patrol Stalkers.
Anomaly Anomaly. The objective to rendezvous with Adept Mullenix completes immediately upon entering the Tunnels, even if the party uses the eastern entrance.
